Mernissi is a Moroccan sociologist, writer and lecturer at Mohammed V University. Dreams of Trespass is a graceful and humorous coming-of-age memoir depicting traditional life in a harem in 1940s Fez. The strict codes defining and limiting women’s lives bewildered the young Mernissi who writes of the borders she encountered between childhood and adulthood, public and private lives, and male and female. Her book paints a candid picture of Morocco on the verge of independence and reform and of the conflicting attitudes of the females in her family about harem life and tradition.
