The Ishpeming Volunteer Fire Department was called to a structure fire by Marquette County Central Dispatch at 713 N. 2nd Street in Ishpeming @ approximately 11:30am, Saturday, February 28th.
Upon arrival fire crews found flames coming from the front of the homes basement and first floor. Shortly after Firefighter’s arrived the first floor collapsed into the basement area of the home where a fireplace was located. The home’s owner, David McNease, was not home at the time of the fire. McNease told Firefighter’s he had lit fireplace before he left the residence earlier in the morning. Preliminary investigation by Firefighter’s believed the fire was caused by the homes fireplace and/or chimney that was located in the basement of the home. The home was insured at the time of the fire, and is considered a total loss.
The American Red Cross responded to the scene to assist the home’s owner and provided Firefighter’s with water, Gatorade, hot coffee and sandwiches. The Marquette County Pigs & Heat Fund was also contacted to provide relief.
20 Firefighters responded to the call from Ishpeming and remained on scene for about 6 hours, extinguishing hot spots. The fire department was called back for a rekindle at the residence at about 7:00pm, Firefighter’s remained on scene for about 45 minutes.
No injuries were reported.
Assisting at the scene was Marquette County Rescue 131, Ishpeming Township Fire Department, Negaunee City Fire Department, Bell Memorial EMS, Ishpeming City Police and Ishpeming Public Works Department.
