MSHS Poetry Out Loud Recitation Championship

Marquette, MI-January 20, 2015-The third annual Marquette Senior High School Poetry Out Loud Recitation Championship will be held Wednesday, January 21st, starting at 8:24 a.m. in the Shirley Smith Little Theatre at MSHS.  The competition will conclude at approximately 10 a.m. Students qualified for the competition by competing in recitation contests held within MSHS English classes.

The MSHS Champion will advance to the Michigan State Championship in East Lansing on March 12th and 13th.  The State Championship is sponsored by the Michigan Humanities Council.  The state winner will receive $200 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete for the national championship.

Nearly 80,000 students from more than 50 Michigan high schools have participated in Poetry Out Loud programs since 2005.

The MSHS Poetry Recitation Championship will consist of two rounds, with each contestant reciting one poem in each round, in accordance with rules set forth by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Judges for the competition include Poet Laureate of the Upper Peninsula Russell Thorburn, Professor Emeritus of Northern Michigan University Thomas Hyslop, poet, artist and educator Kathleen Heideman, and Marquette Area Public Schools Board Member and novelist Matt Williams.
