Baby with The Bathwater Offers Delightfully Twisted Take On Parenting Starting October 16th

HOUGHTON, Michigan (October 6, 2014) – The absurdities of parenting are brought to vivid life in Christopher Durang’s pitch black comedy, Baby with the Bathwater, to be presented by Michigan Technological University’s Department of Visual and Performing Arts students at the McArdle Theater on Michigan Tech’s campus. The play runs October 16–18 and October 23–25 at 7:30pm; tickets are $13. The play contains adult humor and language not suitable for children.

This sharp, wacky satire skewers the challenges of childrearing. New parents, Helen and John Dingleberry, get so caught up in trying to decipher the contradictory publications on bringing up baby that they forget to check its gender. “This play treats parenthood in such an absurd way, it’s comedic – in fact, it’s hilarious,” said director Trish Helsel, associate professor of theatre. “You’ll find yourself saying, ‘Wow, this is a really messed up family!’ Essentially, the point is to really show how not to bring up your child.”

Parents Helen and John are joined by the outrageous Nanny, an immoral “Mary Poppins” who offers the baby tainted toys, and treats it with something less than loving care. As the play fast-forwards to the future, the audience meets the grown child and discovers the impact of this insanely unorthodox upbringing. As with Durang’s other plays, such as Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You and Beyond Therapy, no subject is off limits, from religion to sex addiction to child abduction. All are addressed with wacky, over-the-top glee.

For tickets, go online, or call Ticketing Operations at Michigan Tech’s Student Development Complex (SDC), 906-487-2073, or visit in person at 600 MacInnes Drive, Houghton. SDC box office hours are 8am–9pm, Monday-Friday; 8am–7pm on Saturday; and noon–8pm on Sunday. Please note the Rozsa Box Office is only open two hours prior to show times.
