Rabbit Island Exhibit Closing Talk, Reception Sunday September 28th

MARQUETTE, MICHIGAN – A panel discussion and closing reception for the Rabbit Island 2014 Residency Exhibition at Northern Michigan University will be held on Sunday, Sept. 28. The panel discussion with residency co-founders Robert Gorski and Andrew Ranville, along with this year’s featured artists, will be held at 3 p.m. in the University Center Great Lakes Rooms as part of the UNITED conference at NMU. The closing reception follows at 5 p.m. at the DeVos Art Museum.

The Rabbit Island residency, located on a remote Lake Superior island, unofficially launched in 2010. Last year, 115 applications were received for the first official residency program, representing all disciplines from the United States, Australia, South Africa, South America and Europe. This exhibition highlights the work of six artists and writers who interacted with nature for one to three weeks in June and July and expressed their experiences creatively. They provide audiences with an exploration of themes such as isolation, spatial relationships, human migration and the indigenous history of Rabbit Island.

The exhibit is made possible in part by an award from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs, the National Endowment for the Arts as well as NMU’s Department of English and Center for Native American Studies.
