The U.P. Catholic Columnist Recognized by Catholic Press Association

(Marquette, MI) -Jim LaJoie’s regular column for The U.P. Catholic, From the Sidelines, received an Honorable Mention by the Catholic Press Association of The United States and Canada. The award was announced on June 20, 2014 at the Catholic Media Conference in Charlotte, N.C.

LaJoie’s column was entered into the “Best Regular Column – Culture, the arts and leisure” category, and was up against publications of every size, including national publications. “I’m very honored to be recognized for my writing by the Catholic Press Association,” LaJoie said. “It’s really a privilege to contribute and write a monthly sports column for The U.P. Catholic newspaper. I’m very blessed and appreciative.”

The column began on June 6, 2003 with the idea of bringing sports coverage to the newspaper. In recent years, it has grown to focus on the connections between sports and faith. For instance, LaJoie’s May 23, 2014 column reflected on the misplaced criticism heaped by the national press on New York Met’s second baseman Daniel Murphy, for taking three days off from the season to be with his wife for the birth of their son.

“Congratulations to Jim,” said John Fee, editor of The U.P. Catholic, “for receiving this well-deserved recognition by his peers. It shows he can hold his own against some of the best writers across the U.S. and Canada. Jim is a great asset for the newspaper. He not only writes his monthly award-winning column, he is a regular contributor of feature stories and personality profiles. I look forward to working with Jim well into the future.”
