Marquette, Michigan – Umut Acar, who recently completed his first year as Turkish Consul General in Chicago, will give a presentation at Northern Michigan University as a guest of the criminal justice department. He will address Turkey’s redefinition of terrorism as a result of July’s military coup d’état attempt and “Fethullah Gulen’s terrorist organization.” The talk is scheduled at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, in room 2306 of the University Center. The public is invited.
Acar was born in Unye, Turkey, in 1974. He started his career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he served in various capacities, most recently as chief of cabinet to the minister. He also served as third secretary at the Turkish Embassy in Sofia; vice consul and consul at the Turkish Consulate General in Frankfurt; and counselor for the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Turkey to the Council of Europe. He received his undergraduate degree at the Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences of Gazi University.
