DNR Receives Grant for 15 Automated External Defibrillators from Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation

Conservation officers from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources have received a grant from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation to cover the cost of 15 automated external defibrillators (AEDs). The Detroit Fire Department and the Waterford Regional Fire Department also received donations from the foundation. The presentations took place June 4 at the Detroit Fire Department.

It is the goal of the DNR Law Enforcement Division to equip every conservation officer with an AED unit, explained Sgt. Jeff Rabbers, a DNR conservation officer who supervises officers in Allegan, Barry and Kalamazoo counties. Rabbers put together the DNR’s application for the eventual grant of $21,484, which purchased the AEDs.

“Conservation officers are trained as first responders, and in many rural parts of Michigan we may be the only law enforcement personnel available,” Rabbers said. “These 15 units will help save lives and put us a step closer to our goal of having each conservation officer in the field trained and equipped with an AED.”

An AED is a portable electronic device that is used to treat cardiac arrest victims in an effort to restore a normal heart rhythm.

The Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation is the charitable arm of the Firehouse Subs restaurant chain headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida. The foundation has awarded grants in 38 different states and Puerto Rico, providing firefighters and other first responders with new equipment and gear, such as AEDs, turnout gear, radios, extrication equipment and thermal imaging cameras.

Firehouse Subs has more than 750 locations in 41 states and Puerto Rico, including 15 locations in Michigan. For more information, go to www.firehousesubs.com.
