‘Camp Kitigin’ Offers Summer Camp Nostalgia, Outdoor Fun For Adults

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Michigan Recreation and Park Association (MRPA) have created a unique Michigan experience to help adults disconnect from their busy YMCA Camp Timbers logolives and reconnect with nature. “Camp Kitigin” at the YMCA Camp Timbers is set for Aug. 15-17 and Sept. 12-14.

Arriving on Friday and departing on Sunday, campers will enjoy Camp Kitigin’s all-inclusive experience featuring lodging, meals and activities. The camp is geared toward adults who find that most of their time is spent engaged with technology: computers, phones, tablets and televisions. Camp Kitigin’s “screen-free” weekends create a tech timeout, so campers can remember what it feels like to truly enjoy the outdoors.

“In a 2008 University of Michigan study, it was proven that being in nature improves human memory and focus,” said Ann Conklin, chief operating officer at MRPA. “Camp Kitigin is an opportunity for adults to spend time in nature, disconnecting for a short time to return to work and family with an improved sense of well-being.”

Designed for both men and women, Camp Kitigin will separate campers into girls’ and boys’ cabins. Every camper will receive a Camp Kitigin participant pack including a T-shirt, journal and pen, disposable camera and more. Weekend recreation activities will include archery, kayaking, disc golf, fishing, horseback riding, swimming, zip-lining and other summer camp traditions, old and new.

Camp Kitigin takes place at YMCA Camp Timbers in West Branch. The cost is $200 per camper and proceeds will be donated to MRPA to help fund youth athletic programs statewide. Reservations can be made at
