School Kids Prepare to Release Baby Salmon, Starting 6th

After 6 months of care and feeding in the classroom, the salmon are ready for bigger water.

(Marquette, MI) – May, 2014 – The Fred Waara Chapter of Trout Unlimited (FWCTU), headquartered in Marquette, initiated the Salmon in the Classroom (SIC) program more than a decade ago.  Through the SIC program, FWCTU provides funding and support for the set-up of 7 aquariums in schools throughout the central U.P.  Each year the aquariums are supplied with 200 salmon eggs in late November, provided by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and they hatch in January.  Teachers and students raise the salmon until early May when they take a field trip to a local salmon habitat and release the fish into the stream.  During the winter period, the teachers incorporate the salmon into many of their lesson plans such as environment, fish habitat, conservation, and water quality.

FWCTU volunteers will assist the teachers and students of the following schools as they release their salmon:

  • Superior Central School, Tuesday, May 6th at 8:45AM at the Carp River at Marquette Mountain Ski Hill
  • Powell Township School, Tuesday, May 6th at 2:00PM at the Iron River at Big Bay
  • Gladstone Middle School, Wednesday, May 7th at 9:15AM at Pioneer Park in Escanaba
  • Negaunee Middle School, Wednesday, May 7th at 11:15AM at the Carp River at Marquette Mountain Ski Hill
  • Gwinn Middle School, Friday, May 9th at 9:00AM at the Carp River at Marquette Mountain Ski Hill.
  • Mid-Peninsula School, Friday, May 9th at 9:00AM at Pioneer Park in Escanaba

After each fish release, the FWCTU chapter members will assist the students in macro-invertebrate (bug) collection and identification.

If the river water level is too high and too fast, the release locations may be changed to the Dead River below Tourist Park Dam.  Contact Bob Jensen at 906-228-3052 (pbjup@hotmail.com) for additional details, or the day before to confirm the location.
