MARQUETTE, MICHIGAN – In recognition of May as Mental Health month, Your Mind Matters hosts a workshop on “Making Recovery Real” on Monday, May 5 from at 6:30-8:30pm in the Peter White Public Library’s Shiras room.
This free two hour class explores what recovery is, how a person can create it in their lives and how the community and friends can support it. The session is useful for anyone living with mental illness, caring about someone living with mental illness or wanting to make changes and choices in their life.
Topics of discussion to support a life in recovery include managing one’s disease and living in a healthy way, finding and creating a stable and safe place to live, discovering meaningful daily activities, achieving independence, obtaining the resources to participate in society and surrounding oneself by relationships that provide support, love, and hope.
Presenters are Lucy W. Wilcox, MS, MFT, LLP, a licensed psychotherapist in private practice and John Taylor, Peer Support Specialist, who belongs to the National Alliance on Mental Illness speaker bureau, participates in the In Your Own Voice program and is on the Pathways Recipient Rights Advisory Committee. The workshop is based on a training created by Recovery Innovations in Arizona and brought to our state by the Michigan Department of Community Health.
There is no admission charge and no registration is required. Your Mind Matters is a program series which strives to raise awareness of mental health issues, highlight community resources, reduce the stigma of mental illness, and promote the importance of mental wellness for all. The series is sponsored by a coalition of community health organizations, advocacy groups, individuals, and hosted by the Peter White Public Library.
