“Longyear Library 101” on Wednesday April 16

MARQUETTE, MICHIGAN – In honor of National Library Week, the John M. Longyear Library will be hosting “Longyear Library 101” on Wednesday April 16 at 6:30 pm at the Marquette Regional History Center, 145 W. Spring St.

In 1925, Mr. Longyear’s collection of books, maps, manuscripts, and photographs became the nucleus of the library. Since that time the library has grown to more than 17,000 books, 800 maps, 80,000 obituaries and thousands of photographic images making it one of the finest research libraries in Michigan specializing in the history of the Lake Superior Region. Librarians Rosemary Michelin and Beth Gruber will walk you through the history of the Longyear Library and highlight interesting aspects of the collection including Amos Harlow’s 1849 Postal Book, Marquette County Poor House Inmate Records, and various local school records from 1908-2002. Stop in any time during the week (April 15-19) to take a map quiz and be entered for a door prize drawing.
