Center for Native American Studies Hosts Events

MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University’s Center for Native American Studies will host two upcoming events: a rescheduled presentation by Phil Bellfy based on his award-winning book, Three Fires Unity: The Anishnaabeg of the Lake Huron Borderlands; and the inaugural Native American Service Learning Partnership Institute.

Bellfy’s talk will begin at 7 p.m. Monday, March 31, in 105 Jamrich Hall. It is free and open to the public. He is professor emeritus of American Indian studies at Michigan State University and has been involved in environmental and tribal rights activism for more than 40 years.

The institute will be held Thursday and Friday, April 3-4. It will focus on how academic service learning partnerships can address multiple needs of tribal communities. The keynote speaker will be William Mendoza, executive director of the White House Initiative on American Indian and Alaska Native Education. This event is also free, but registration is requested. Forms and more information are available at www.nmu.edu/nativeamericans.
