Maize Plus Bacteria: One-Two Punch Knocks Copper Out of Stamp Sand

HOUGHTON, MI – Nothing grows on the desert of stamp sand by the UP village of Gay. A legacy of copper mining, it was deposited decades ago near the Lake Superior shore.

Michigan Tech’s Ramakrishna Wusirika is working toward a simple, practical way to remediate that wasteland.

Plus, he and his team are shedding light on the inner workings of the plants and bacteria that do the work.
