NMU Prof Discusses Regional Impact of War of 1812 on February 13th

Marquette, Mich. —Northern Michigan University history professor Russell Magnaghi will discuss the regional impact of one of the most decisive wars in American history when he presents “Remembering the War of 1812 in the Lake Superior Basin” at the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center. His talk is scheduled at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, in 105 Cohodas Hall. It is free and open to the public.

Areas around Lake Superior were fairly isolated from the events of the War of 1812. But with commercial strongholds such as Fort William in Thunder Bay, the region was a potentially valuable target during wartime. Magnaghi will discuss the war’s significance on the Native American, American, Canadian and British inhabitants of the Lake Superior region and the lasting legacy of the conflict. He is a member of the Michigan War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission appointed by Gov. Rick Snyder.
