Imdieke Chairs Geisel Award Committee

Marquette, MIApril 10, 2017 – Sandra Imdieke, Northern Michigan University education professor, is chair of the 2018 Theodor Seuss Geisel Award selection committee. The annual award is given to author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished American book for beginning readers published in English in the United States during the preceding year.

Imdieke and committee members will review the eligible books published in 2017 and will make the award decision, announcement and presentation in 2018.

“It was a surprise and an honor to be asked to chair this committee,” said Imdieke. “Those of us who serve on these book award committees are often asked why we would want to read and review the hundreds of titles we receive during the year. But, as a committee member, you soon realize the privilege and responsibility you have been given to make recommendations that will add to the rich canon and history of children’s literature.”

The American Library Association’s Geisel Award honors books that will motivate and support readers ranging between pre-kindergarten through second grade. Dr. Seuss, the pen name of Theodor Seuss Geisel, is associated with easy-to-read books, such as The Cat in the Hat. The award honors that style of book.

Imdieke has served on the Newbery Award committee and as chair of the Caldecott Award committee. She was the recipient of the 2005 Michigan’s Reading Association’s Teacher Education Award. She has also served as a regional coordinator and chair of the International Reading Association’s Teachers’ Choices Project.
