Civil Rights Film Series at NMU Starting February 12th

MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University is celebrating Black History Month with a Civil Rights film series highlighting three classic movies. All will be shown from 11:30-1:30 p.m. in Whitman Hall 136 on their respective dates. The series is free and open to the public.

The William Still Story will be shown on Wednesday, Feb. 12. It is a documentary that provides insight into the Underground Railroad and chronicles William Still’s historic involvement as a railroad conductor.

Scottsboro: An American Tragedy, scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 19, documents events that incited the civil rights movement when two white women accused a group of nine black teenagers of rape.

The Loving Story on Thursday, Feb. 27, will explore a historical case leading to the 1967 U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized interracial marriage.

Northern Michigan University’s multicultural education and resource center is sponsoring these showings.
