Special Olympics Michigan Athlete Excited to Cross the Mackinac Bridge During Labor Day Run

(MT. PLEASANT, Mich.) – Special Olympics Michigan athlete Ben Snider will be among the 500 runners taking part in this year’s Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Run. Spartan Stores is the Statewide Premier Gold Medal Sponsor of Special Olympics Michigan and will be celebrating 30 years in that partnership level in 2014. Spartan Stores is also a sponsor of the Bridge Run. Spartan Stores was allowed to provide one runner, and they chose the 20-year-old from Grand Rapids who will represent both Special Olympics Michigan and Spartan Stores during the Bridge Run on Monday, September 2.

Snider, who is an avid runner, was the Spartan Stores Healthy Athlete of the Year in 2012. The title is awarded every year at the Special Olympics Michigan State Summer Games to the athlete who best exemplifies leadership and a desire to lead a healthy lifestyle.

“I’ve never been on the Mackinac Bridge before, so I think it’s very cool that I get to do the Bridge Run,” said Snider. “I’m a runner and can’t wait to enjoy the scenery when I’m on the bridge.”

Ben Snider has been involved with Special Olympics Michigan for nine years. He competes in track, basketball, soccer, poly-hockey and bowling.

Governor Rick Snyder will attend the 11th Annual Bridge Run and will send runners off at the start. He will also take part in the Bridge Walk that follows the run.

In order to participate in the Bridge Run, runners must be selected from a lottery pool. Approximately 1,000 people enter the lottery each year with only half earning the honor of crossing the Mighty Mac during the Bridge Run.
