HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN – Many of today’s adults have grown up with advanced technology such as computers, the Internet and smart phones, but what about those who grew up in a time where phone calls and letters were the main forms of communication?
Michigan Technological University’s Breaking Digital Barriers group is working to help the elderly and others who have not grown up with digital literacy. Students, faculty and staff from Michigan Tech’s computer science and humanities departments volunteer to assist participants with the basics of computer literacy.
Each Friday morning, they spend time at the Portage Lake District Library in downtown Houghton, Mich., helping mostly senior citizens who are mystified by the challenges of using a computer.
“The elderly people arrive computer-challenged and leave computer-ready when the tutorials are over, with wide, bright smiles on their faces,” says the public library director Shawn Leche.
