Ishpeming, MI—Dec. 2, 2013 —Cliffs Natural Resources, (NYSE: CLF) (Paris: CLF) announced that a fire broke out just before 6:00 am today at the Empire Mine in Michigan. The fire involved a limestone feeding system which includes equipment and conveyors that feed crushed limestone into the Empire concentrator plant.
Fire departments from Ishpeming Township, Richmond Township, Marquette Township and the City of Negaunee responded to the scene. Employees were evacuated safely and there are no injuries to report.
The fire has been contained and employees have been brought back into the plant to perform their normal work duties. The Empire plant will remain temporarily shut down until further notice. The extent of the damages and impact to future production volume is currently being evaluated.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and will be investigated by Cliffs Natural Resources inc., the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the United Steelworkers.
Cliffs’ nearby Tilden Mine and processing facilities were not affected and are currently operating as scheduled.
