Natural Resources Commission to Meet Thursday in Iron Mountain

The Michigan Natural Resources Commission (NRC) will hold its regular monthly meeting on Thursday, Oct. 10, at the Pine Mountain Resort, N3332 Pine Mountain Road, in Iron Mountain.

The day begins at 1 p.m. (Central Standard Time) with a meeting of the NRC Policy Committee on Wildlife and Fisheries. The committee will preview 2014 spring turkey regulations, get an outline of important questions to be asked in any evaluation of the effectiveness of antler point restrictions (APRs), receive an overview of fish hatcheries’ production and hear reports from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Wildlife and Fisheries divisions.

At 2:30 p.m. the Committee of the Whole will receive a report from DNR Director Keith Creagh, as well as a legislative update.

At 4 p.m. Sten Fjeldheim and Dave Cella will receive Partners in Conservation Awards. Fjeldheim, an avid skiing enthusiast and trails advocate, is being recognized for his years of volunteer efforts to expand opportunities for the cross-country skiing community and to improve Michigan’s trail system. Cella is being honored for his long history of promoting the wise use of natural resources and youth participation in sport fishing.

Immediately following the awards presentations, the NRC will hear comments from the public. Those wishing to make public comments before the NRC should contact Deb Whipple, executive assistant to the NRC, at 517-373-2352 or whippled1@michigan.gov to register.

Following public comments, the NRC is scheduled to consider policy recommendations, including revision (for those policies that are outdated) and rescinding (for those policies that now pertain to the Department of Environmental Quality and no longer align with NRC authority).

In addition, action is expected to streamline the permit policy for taking deer on airport property, clarify the legal means of take for deer hunting, and streamline policies for revoking or suspending special take permits pertaining to nuisance animals and disease control.

The commission will also act on fisheries orders regarding:

  • Trout, salmon, whitefish, lake herring, smelt and crayfish regulations;
  • Spawning closures;
  • Special regulations for cool-water species on select lakes;
  • Designated trout streams;
  • Closed and restricted research waters;
  • Fishing prohibited in fish ladders; and
  • The Lake St. Clair – Detroit River boundary designation.

Several items, including seven land transactions, are scheduled for DNR director’s action.
