8th Annual Iron Oars Regatta Will Be Sunday September 15th

The Upper Peninsula Community Rowing Club invites the public to attend its 8th Annual Iron Oars Regatta held Sunday September 15th from 8 AM to 12 PM on Teal Lake in Negaunee. Teams from across the Midwest have been invited to compete in sweep rowing and sculling on a 2000 meter (approximately 1.25 mile) course. Admission is free and concessions are available. Come join us to cheer on the teams and learn more about this interesting sport!

Some additional information: In sweep rowing, the rower sits in a boat called a shell. The 8 person boat is 60 feet long, and weighs approximately 200 pounds. MSU 8 is 225 lbs. Oars are 12 feet long in sweep rowing. Sculling oars are 9 ft long. Each person in the sweep rowing event has one oar that they hold with both hands. In contrast, a single scull (with a “c”) is much shorter and lighter- 27 to 30 feet long and about 30 to 40 pounds. Scullers have 2 oars, one in each hand.

The Upper Peninsula Community Rowing Club was founded in 2004 and held it’s first Regatta in 2006. Our mission is to promote the sport of rowing in Marquette County. Rowing provides a low impact, total body work out with great emphasis on teamwork. When done correctly, rowing looks graceful, elegant and effortless. And although rowers are some of the strongest athletes in the world, rowing is the ultimate walk on sport.

Tips for watching the race: The crew that makes rowing look the easiest are probably doing the best job. The motion should be continuous and fluid with synchronized paddle movements. There should be very little splash from the oar blades and the boat should maintain a consistent speed. Again, when done correctly, all will appear effortless.
