Escanaba, MI – Thursday promises to be one of the busiest and most diverse days of U.P. State Fair Week 2013 with Senior Citizens Day and Native American Awareness Day drawing hundreds of participants.
This year’s fair is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 12, through Sunday, Aug. 18, in Escanaba.
The region’s rich Native American culture will be celebrated at the activities event at the Fair Thursday, Aug. 15. Admission is included with the cost of admission to the fair.
Native American Awareness Day will highlight Native American culture in the community. Drummers, dancers, and craft and food vendors will be featured. Fairgoers who show their CDIB/tribal membership cards will receive a discounted gate admission.
The day is sponsored by the Hannahville Indian Community.
Thursday is also Senior Citizens’ Appreciation Day, marked by the 20th annual Health and Wellness Fair for Senior Citizens, which will take place under the grandstand. Those over 65 will also be eligible for discounted gate admission.
The Health and Wellness Fair will include free health tests, demonstrations and goodie bags to be filled by participants as they visit scores of vendors from throughout the region.
The health fair is sponsored by Delta County Case Coordinators.
Information and services to be featured during the health fair include: cholesterol checks, BMI/body fat testing, blood sugar evaluations, colorectal screening kits, bone density scans, blood pressure checks, spirometry evaluation, massages, chiropractic checks and information about Camp 911.
Debbie Wiltzius of Menominee-Delta-Schoolcraft Community Action Agency’s Personal Care Services is part of the Delta County Case Coordinators.
“We bring in vendors who help seniors deal with various health issues and protect themselves from scams they need to watch for. We have a different theme every year, so we get some new vendors in, but we always have representatives of hospitals, nursing homes, home health and much more,” Wiltzius said.
“We get around 800 to 1,000 people on each day. Our goal is to get as much information as we can to the people who attend the health fair,” she said.
