Ishpeming, Michigan – At 13:31 hours on 07/31/2013 the Ishpeming Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to an apartment building fire at 363 W. Johnson Street. The building contained 6 apartments. Upon arrival there was heavy smoke showing throughout the building, with fire coming from one of the ground floor apartment windows. There was a report of one male in a wheel chair still in one of the apartments prior to the fire departments arrival. A father and son who are neighbors smelled smoke and came over to see if they could help. They were told there was an elderly man in a wheel chair still in a ground floor unit. They tore the screen away from the window, the son entered the apartment through the window and found the elderly man inside. He then handed the man to his father through the window, along with the man’s wheelchair, and exited the apartment. Without their quick action it might have been a different outcome for the elderly man.
The fire was caused by a lit candle in another lower level unit bedroom. The candle fell onto the bed, igniting the bedding. The apartment was occupied by two small children and their mother at the time. She was able to get herself and her two small children out of the building before calling 911 to report the fire.
The fire was contained within 10 minutes of the fire departments arrival. Fire damage was contained to the one ground floor apartment. That apartment received heavy fire, smoke and water damage, and smoke damage throughout the entire building. The fire department remained on scene until about 15:00.
Assisting at the scene were Negaunee City Fire Department, Marquette County Rescue 131, Bell Memorial EMS and Ishpeming Police Department.
No injuries were reported.
The apartment building is owned by Midtown Apts. LLC of Ishpeming
It’s believed that a total of 10 persons in 5 apartments were displaced by the fire. Pigs & Heat will be assisting the fire victims along with The American Red Cross.
