Cliffs Tree Planting Program Teaches Environmental Stewardship

Ishpeming, MI—Cliffs Natural Resources, (NYSE: CLF) (Paris: CLF) announced today that nearly two dozen trees were recently planted on the grounds of the Michigan Iron Industry Museum in Negaunee Township as part of Cliffs Michigan operations fifth annual community tree planting event.

Cliffs partnered with the Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes to plant the trees at various locations around the museum to help improve the aesthetics and prevent motorized vehicles from driving on the trails. The cost for the trees and additional planting expenses were covered by Cliffs.

One of Cliffs core values is environmental stewardship, and by partnering with the Girl Scouts, we’re able to demonstrate firsthand what that means,” said Jennifer Huetter, Cliffs’ district manager, public affairs in Michigan. “This kind of event is a win-win for all. The girls learn about taking care of the environment and the Michigan Iron Industry Museum is able to get trees planted in several needed areas.”

In addition to learning about the environment and giving back to the museum, Cliffs donated $500 to the Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes. The money will be used for upcoming outings and projects.

We’re very thankful for this opportunity to partner with Cliffs and for the donation, said Les Bek, fund development manager for the Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes. “Girl Scouts is about teaching leadership, building courage, confidence and character. This was a great opportunity for the girls to see how a company like Cliffs is giving back to the local community.”

Over the past five years, trees have been planted along the Iron Ore Heritage Trail, along the Carp Creek in Ishpeming and at the Michigan Iron Industry Museum as part of an annual community tree planting program sponsored by Cliffs. The trees selected are native to the area and are expected to flourish well in this environment.
