Marquette Native Running to Help the Fight Against Cancer April 21st

On April 21st, 2014, Peter Lorinser will be running 26.2 miles for a very special cause: finding cures for cancer. On Patriots Day, which is better known to many New Englanders as Marathon Monday, Peter is running the 2014 Boston Marathon as a member of the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge (DFMC) team.

In order to raise awareness and to raise money to aide the fight against cancer, 25-year-old Marquette native, Peter, is running as a member of the DFMC team. Your support of his run will help fund essential cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. His goal is to raise $10,000!

100% of the funds raised goes to the Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Cancer Research at Dana-Farber. A donation helps foster scientific breakthroughs by advancing the work of gifted researchers in a variety of basic research disciplines helping them to discover better treatments to enhance patients’ quality of life and hopefully a cure from someone’s cancer.

For the past two years Peter has been working in Boston, MA as a Special Education Teacher. As a special education teacher, Peter has the privilege to work with very courageous children; some of who, unfortunately, have battled with cancer but have suffered consequences of their treatment with resultant special educational needs. One student, in particular, has had a life changing impact on Peter. This student has successfully put cancer (leukemia) into remission and is the one of the most diligent, kind, and hardworking kids Peter has met in his young teaching career. His tenacity and optimism are the primary reasons why Peter has been compelled to run for charity. When Peter told his students that he was thinking of running the Boston Marathon but was having second doubts about doing so because of the level of commitment, this student left Peter this note on his desk after class:

Who is your hero?
• “Mr. Lorinser”
What character traits make him heroic?
• “Ability to overcome challenges”
What actions (obstacles, challenges, etc..) make him a hero?
• “Teaching with no teeth” (recent adult hockey injury which made
his teaching job difficult with nine injured or missing teeth and
double jaw fracture but back to work in several days)
• “He is going to run a marathon for charity”
Do you think other people will view him as a hero, too?
• “Yes”

This note inspired Peter to go forward with the Marathon “How couldn’t it?” Peter often says. His student’s story is, unfortunately, not unique and there are far too many like his. Peter is running the Marathon to raise money and awareness about cancer. By giving a gift to his run you are playing a vital role in bringing an end to the challenge of cancer.
