Marquette Food Co-op Hosts Eighth Annual Farm Tour

Marquette, MI – The Marquette Food Co-op is hosting the Eighth Annual Farm Tours, an opportunity to visit local farms, meet the farmers, and learn about where and how food is grown in the U.P. The tour is part of the Marquette Food Co-op’s ongoing effort to connect people with their food and educate the public about the importance of buying and supporting local farmers and growers. “We go because we enjoy seeing the evolution of the local farms,” says Diane Patrick, local food advocate. “We go every year, even to the same farms so that we can see how they are changing, and to encourage and support the farmers in their endeavors.”

Twelve local farms, including Seeds and Spores Family Farm, Shady Grove Farm, and Rock River Farm, will offer tours. Farm Tours began on Sunday, May 26th in the Chatham area with Rock River Farm, Rock River Perennial Garden & Greenhouse, and Reh-Morr Farm. “We do the farm tours because it’s an opportunity for everyone in the community to see our farm and learn about how a sustainable farm works,” says Shailah Bunce of Rock River Farm. The next farm tour is at Grand Bees Apiary in L’Anse on Sunday, June 2 from 1-4pm. Grand Bees will give tours of their bee keeping operation, explaining how they produce their delicious honey. Later tours are on farms in L’Anse, Cornell, Skandia, Republic, Gwinn, and Marquette.

The event is organized so that participants are free to visit the farms at their leisure during the designated hours, but this year each farm will be give a special tour that highlights their farm operations on topics like season extension with hoop houses, no-till farming, keeping bees, farm diversity, permaculture. Stop by the Marquette Food Co-op located at 109 W. Baraga to pick up a Farm Tour Guide with driving directions and detailed information, or visit our website at www.marquettefood.coop
