NMU Music Department Performs Three Concerts

Marquette, MI – The Northern Michigan University Music Department has performances at the Reynolds Recital Hall by its percussion, symphonic band and orchestra ensembles in mid-April.

The NMU Percussion Ensemble will hold a concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 14. The 17-member student ensemble, directed by the professor of percussion, James A. Strain, will play pieces by Strain, Leroy Anderson, Carrol M. Butts, Henry Cowell, Chris Crockarell, Bela Fleck, Eustasio Rosales and Christopher Rouse.

The NMU Symphonic Band, directed by Stephen Grugin, takes center stage at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 15. The program will consist of traditional and contemporary works, including “Candide Suite” by Leonard Bernstein, “Rest” by Frank Ticheli and “Fantasia in G” by Timothy Mahr.

The NMU Orchestra’s concert is at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 18. Directed by Barbara Rhyneer, the group will perform three main works: “Daybreak” by NMU student Alex Flannery of Negaunee; “Synthetic Symphony,” a combination of four movements from different symphonies; and “Overture to Orpheus and the Underworld” by Jacques Offenbach.

There is no admission charge for the concerts.
