Michigan Historical Center Announces Nomination Opportunity For Outstanding Michigan History Teachers

The Michigan Historical Center in Lansing is accepting nominations for the 2013 Odyssey Award for teaching excellence in Michigan history.

The award is sponsored by the Michigan History Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports the work of the Michigan Historical Center. The foundation underwrites the center’s education programs that inspire more than 60,000 Michigan students each year to explore their state’s history at the Michigan Historical Museum. The nomination deadline is Aug. 2, 2013.

Essential to all successful instructional programs are the dedicated teachers who inspire their students and instill in them a passion for learning. The Michigan Historical Center Odyssey Award recognizes these outstanding teachers. Each year the award honors two Michigan history teachers who demonstrate excellence in teaching and supporting Michigan history.

Mary Foulke, one of last year’s recipients, explained the value of the award, “I am extremely honored and humbled to have received the 2012 Michigan History Foundation Odyssey Award. It is overwhelming to receive such an award from doing what my life’s passion is all about, history. We have such a deep and rich history in this state and I have tried to impart to my students that same appreciation and love.”

The names of the 2013 Odyssey Award recipients will be announced in September. Representatives from the Michigan Historical Center will present award plaques along with a cash gift of $1,000 and one annual family membership to the Michigan Historical Museum to recipients during ceremonies at their schools.

“One of the greatest gifts a child can receive is the sense of being part of a continuum connected to both the past and the future,” said Michigan Historical Center Director Sandra Clark. “We take great delight in honoring teachers who use Michigan history to give this gift as they inspire a love of learning in our children.”

All Michigan history K-12 educators are eligible for the award. Nominees are judged on their depth of knowledge about Michigan history, leadership in teaching others about Michigan history and creative teaching methods.
