MARQUETTE—The Great Yooper Folk Dance and Café will be held on Sunday, Feb. 24, at Northern Michigan University. Music will be provided by two traditional acts: Kaivama and White Water. Yooper treats and drinks will also be available for purchase. The event begins at 1 p.m. in the University Center Great Lakes Rooms. Admission is $2 for adults and free for students/kids.
The folk dance closes out U.P. Heritage Month activities sponsored by the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at NMU.
Kaivama is the Minneapolis duo featuring Ishpeming native Jonathan Rundman and fiddler Sara Pajanen. It has been called one of the most cutting-edge Finnish music groups in the United States. Kaivama has toured the U.S. for nearly two years and played at this year’s Finn Fest USA in Tucson. White Water has been one of the region’s most respected musical groups for more than three decades. It is known for its musicianship, four-part harmony vocals and stage presence.
