The Tech Trails at Michigan Technological University will be the site of a fiery school bus crash on Sunday, Sept. 9. Thankfully, it is just a drill, a disaster exercise designed to provide hands-on training for first responders and medical providers from Houghton, Keweenaw and Baraga Counties.
The mock disaster is scheduled for 2 to 4 pm at the Tech Trails trailhead. You are welcome to cover the event.
The fifth annual Western Upper Peninsula Trauma and Critical Care Conference continues on Monday, Sept. 10 with a day of classroom instruction. The event is partially state-supported, including funding from the Region 8 Hospital Preparedness Program.
Participants include Michigan Tech, Portage Health System, Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital, Mercy Emergency Medical Services, Bay Ambulance, the Houghton and Keweenaw County Office of Emergency Management, and other first responders and medical service providers from across the Upper Peninsula. The University of Michigan Health System’s Survival Flight medical transport team is also participating, led by Dr. Brad J. Uren, associate medical director of Survival Flight and a graduate of Michigan Tech.
“The exercise will test local emergency medical services and medical first responders’ ability to triage and otherwise manage the care of children injured in such an incident,” Dr. Uren said.
The drill will also test area hospitals’ ability to absorb mass casualties from a diverse patient population, the ability of EMS to transport large numbers of casualties, and the interagency communication of all parties involved.
