S’mores under the stars
State parks are the perfect place to gaze at the night sky — and they’re also the perfect place to indulge in the chocolaty gooeyness of s’mores! Combine these two favorites and watch the Perseid meteor shower that occurs annually each August.
Seventeen state parks are offering “Meteors & S’mores” where the treats are free and staff will be on-hand to explain this astronomical event. Visit the DNR calendar and scroll down to Aug. 10 and 11 to see the full listing.

A place for pooches
If you’ve got a dog who loves to play in the water, Charles Mears State Park in Pentwater is the place to go! Although, pets are not allowed on designated beaches or areas used for wading or swimming, dogs are welcome at the special pet-friendly area next to the pier.
The park is hosting a couple of canine events soon. Sign up for the Shake, Wag & Roll Benefit Stroll on Aug. 18 to benefit Oceana County Animal Control Shelter. If you’re not quite sure your dog is ready for that, enroll in Canine Camper, where your four-legged friend will learn the basics Aug. 19.
Wondering what the rules are for dogs at a state park campgrounds or boating access sites? Guidelines are posted on the DNR website.

Looking ahead…
We’re proud to again be a part of one of the highlights of summer – the Upper Peninsula State Fair, set for Aug. 13-19 in Escanaba. Among the fair’s many exhibits and events is the DNR’s U.P. Pocket Park, a popular place where thousands of kids will learn to fish or shoot a bow or pellet gun in a safe, fun environment. The Passport to Summer RV will be there on the first night from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. handing out free samples of Hudsonville’s Pure Michigan Caramel Apple ice cream!
