MARQUETTE – Following several years of either too warm or too cold conditions, the Upper Peninsula finally delivered near perfect weather for the 2008 UP200 Dog Sled Race over the weekend in Marquette.
If the conditions are too warm, the sled dogs can easily overheat and the trail is soft and mushy (no pun intended). If it’s too cold, conditions are hazardous for humans before they become hazardous for dogs – but as experienced just a couple of years ago, extreme cold decimated spectator turn-out and can lead to even cancellation.
While the temperatures were still very brisk, spectators solidly lined the UP200 downtown start along Washington Street for about three blocks – from Third St. to Lakeshore Boulevard.
