Nominate an Outstanding Michigan History Teacher for Odyssey Award, $500 cash prize

The Michigan Historical Center is now accepting nominations for the 2012 Odyssey Award for teaching excellence in Michigan history.

Each year, the Michigan Historical Center, together with the Michigan History Foundation, honors up to three Michigan history teachers with the Odyssey Award. The award recognizes K-12 educators who demonstrate excellence in teaching and supporting Michigan history. Nominees are judged on their depth of knowledge about Michigan history, leadership in teaching others about Michigan history, and creative teaching methods. Nominations for the award are being accepted through June 30, 2012.

The Michigan History Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports the work of the Michigan Historical Center. The foundation underwrites center education programs that inspire more than 80,000 Michigan students each year to explore their state’s history at the Michigan Historical Museum.

The names of the 2011 Odyssey Award recipients will be announced publicly in September 2012. Awards, along with a cash gift of $500, will be presented to recipients during ceremonies at their individual schools. Additionally, the awardees will be recognized and honored at the annual Jingle Ball, a fund-raising gala event set for Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Michigan Historical Museum in Lansing.

“Educators who make it a priority to find creative, inspiring ways to teach Michigan’s history and instill a passion for learning deserve to be recognized,” said Michigan Historical Center Director Sandra Clark. “This gives us an opportunity to get to know who these outstanding teachers are, and thank them for the important role they play.”
