Marquette, Mich. (Spring 2012) – Kalyee Whitfield, a student of the Fine Arts Department at Marquette Senior High School, has been named a Michigan Youth Arts Distinguished Scholar and Concerto Competition Finalist, and has been invited to participate in the 50th annual Michigan Youth Arts Festival, May 10-12, 2012, in Kalamazoo. Kaylee was one of four students selected out of 87 semi-finalists to perform a concerto with the Western Michigan University Symphony Orchestra at the gala concert on Friday, May 10 at the Western University School of Music.

Nearly 1,000 Michigan high school student-artists have been invited to attend this year’s Festival. The students, chosen from more than 250,000 across the state, are selected via a rigorous adjudication process adhering to exacting artistic standards. The invited scholars represent multiple artistic disciplines, including creative writing, dance, media arts, instrumental and vocal music, music composition, theatre, and visual art.

“The extraordinary level of talent and dedication of Festival students is truly impressive,” said Michigan Youth Arts Executive Director, Kim Dabbs. “The Distinguished Scholars embody a dedication to excellence coupled with a spirit of innovation that is vital to Michigan’s future.” 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of this three-day event featuring workshops and master classes for the students, alongside student performances and exhibitions that are open to the public.
