Ishpeming, Michigan – Bell Hospital EMS is the first in the area to secure the technology to turn each of its ambulances into wireless hotspots. This means that Bell EMS is able to transmit 4 lead and 12 lead EKG (electrocardiogram) data directly to the Emergency Department via wireless internet from the ambulance, which results in quicker, definitive care for cardiac patients. This information is transmitted while the emergency medical technicians are transporting the patient, so that the Emergency Department physician can review the EKG and determine whether the patient should be transported to Bell Hospital for care or transported directly to MGH to be seen by cardiac specialists. For reference, a cardiac patient in Michigamme Township who must be seen by cardiac specialists can be in the cardiac catheterization lab at MGH within 90 minutes of calling 911.
The EKG transmission capability is the result of several years of research, testing and technology improvements. Bell EMS was able to acquire the advanced technology through community support and with the help of the Bell Foundation, Fox Motors-Negaunee and the USDA Rural Development Community Facilities Grant Program. Bell EMS is the first in the area to make this technology available.
