Marquette, MI – The City of Marquette Art and Culture Center Gallery is proud to present: ‘Grains, Fibers and Threads’ Northern Michigan University Emerging Artists with artwork by Patti Tourville, Corey Kelly, Ann Weber, and Grant Kaihoi. This eclectic display will include photography, human centered design and woodworking.
Corey Kelly creates photography using an antiquated photographic process and old-fashioned objects as subjects which she combines onto the surface of antique linen in order to create commentary on the passing of time. In her words ‘Just as light shines through fabric … these subjects are passing, fading and filtering into something else. What once was will be harnessed into a new form. The use of any one of the three; process, subject and canvas, are mementos of the past.’ Photographer Ann Weber uses a cyanotype process involving digital negatives, watercolor paper and a brown toning process to create her figurative inspired photographs which are based on issues of identity.
Patti Tourville is a human centered design student where her skill and love for sewing has taken on a new dimension. In the process of designing a new product, she states ‘I have learned that addressing meaning has become increasingly more complex. The complexity pushes new boundaries in the physical and psychological aspects of a product, which in turn helps the product to thrive to its utmost potential.’
Grant Kaihoi’s work in wood is inspired by understanding relationships. By juxtaposing different forms and materials he establishes a basic idea on which thought and conversation can be built. Concerning his use of materials Kaihoi states, ‘I believe that a material’s potential lies not in its nature but in the maker’s ability to manipulate that nature. The majority of my work in one way
or another follows this idea of finding potential in material. For example, taking logs that have been discarded as cracked firewood and healing them into higher purposes.’
‘Grains, Fibers and Threads’ Northern Michigan University Emerging Artists will be on display at the Marquette Arts and Culture Center from April 4th through April 28th with a public reception for the artists in the Art Center Gallery on Thursday, April 5th from 6-8 p.m.
