Lansing, MI – Michigan may not be buried under fresh powder yet this year, but that hasn’t stopped ski slopes across Michigan from opening for the season. More than 20 ski resorts throughout the state already have runs open – with many undertaking efforts to make snow to get the remainder of runs open for the year.
Several ski resorts and areas that are currently closed are also making snow, weather permitting, in an attempt to open in time for the holiday weekend.
“We are looking forward to some serious snowfall in Michigan to get all our slopes in peak skiing condition, but ski and snowboard enthusiasts will find more than 125 runs already open – with more to follow,” said George Zimmermann, vice president of Travel Michigan, part of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. “We have more than 41 ski areas in the state that provide terrific downhill and cross country skiing and snowboarding opportunities for every skill level and style. They are part of what makes Michigan a tremendous winter destination.”
The Upper Peninsula and Northwest regions of the state have the largest number of ski destinations open and ready for skiers. However, several in southern Michigan have runs open as well.
“Twenty- eight degrees is the magic number for making snow,” said Mickey MacWilliams, executive director of the Michigan Snowsports Industries Association, Pure Michigan’s winter advertising partner. “If it’s 28 degrees or colder you can bet that our ski areas will be pumping out the snow. So even if there is no snow in your backyard we’ll have it on our slopes.”
