Calendar – Community – 6th Annual Cemetery Walk – June 26

Big Bay – The Marquette Regional History Center will sponsor its sixth annual cemetery walk on Sunday, June 26 at 2 p.m. beginning at the Big Bay Cemetery, located along Raymen Street, one block west of the Draver Park water tower.

Tour guides Rosemary Michelin and Susan Hornbogen will share the stories of area residents while walking through the cemetery. The lumber mills in Big Bay employed hundreds of men. In 1923, five employees of the Lake Independence Lumber company died while fighting a forest fire west of town. Five white crosses at the cemetery are a reminder of this tragedy.

Other stories will focus on Native American family Charles and Maggie Burns, trappers Charles Draver, “Michigan Slim” and “Tin Can Sullivan,” and the McKinney family, who suffered the loss of a son and daughter, William and Pauline, during World War II. Local historian and author Ben Mukkala will share the humorous story of “Good Looking” Tom, a man who worked for the Kaufman family. At the conclusion of the walk, ice cream sundaes will be served at Draver Park.

A donation of $10 is suggested to support future programs. For more information, call 226-3571, visit marquettehistory.org, or visit the center’s Facebook page.
