Welcome news for Upper Peninsula deer and deer hunters! According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the wolf population in the Western Great Lakes has recovered and should be removed from the protection provided by the Endangered Species Act.
“This is great news for the wolf population in Michigan and for the Endangered Species Act,” said DNR Endangered Species Coordinator Chris Hoving. “Treating wolves as an endangered species, when they have reached and exceeded federal recovery goals in Michigan for more than a decade, is a disservice to the species.”
A final determination of the wolves fate will not be decided until a public comment period ends on July 5th of this year.
