Marquette, MI Residents Band Together To Send Message Against Domestic Violence

Graffiti encouraging domestic violence against women painted on a prominent natural landmark in Marquette, MI has residents taking action.  Late yesterday afternoon, a call was received by Phyllis Loonsfoot at the Women’s Center domestic violence shelter in Marquette about a message painted at the Picnic Rocks city park on the Lake Superior shore.  The graffiti reads “BEAT YOUR WIFE” and is on an area of the rocks usually painted by local high school students commemorating their graduation year.

As a photo of the graffiti circulated on Facebook, concerned citizens said they planned to take a boat out to the rocks later today and paint over the message.

Now the City of Marquette has gotten involved.  According to organizers, city authorities do not want private citizens to expose themselves to any risk by going out on the water to paint over the rocks.  The city says they are organizing a crew to take care of the matter as soon as the weather permits them to.  All parties involved say quickly covering up the graffiti will send the message that the Marquette County community does not support domestic violence of any kind.

You can support local efforts to end domestic violence by calling the Women’s Center in Marquette at (906) 225-1346 ext.113.
