Marquette – In recognition of April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Denim Day USA 2010, a campaign to raise awareness and educate the public about rape and sexual assault will be held on Wednesday, April 21. All are encouraged to wear denim.
In 1998, an Italian Supreme Court decision overturned a rape conviction because the victim wore jeans, reasoning she must have helped her attacker remove them. People around the world were outraged. Wearing jeans on Denim Day is an international symbol of protest against against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault.
a “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” fundraiser will be held on Wednesday, April 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Ontario Room in the University Center at Northern Michigan University.
Members of NMU’s Lambda Chi Fraternity have accepted pledges to walk a mile in women’s high heeled shoes in support of sexual assault awareness and prevention. The public is welcome attend and participate in the walk, with or without high heels. All proceeds will benefit the Women’s Center.
