Marquette – Folk singer, songwriter and author Carl Behrend will present the holiday tale “The Christmas Ship” on Wednesday, December 30 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library in Marquette.
Revisit the era when it was a holiday tradition for countless early 20th Century Chicago area residents to gather at the Clark Street Bridge and anxiously await the arrival of the “Christmas ship,” which was loaded with thousands of fresh cut trees from the northwoods of Michigan. Behrend tells the true story of the fierce winter storm of 1912 when, with his tree-filled ship covered in ice, the skipper and crew of the sailing vessel Rouse Simmons tragically sank not far from the shores of Two Rivers, Wisconsin.
