Obsession rules the races at Big Bay’s Mud Fun Run

OBSESSIONThe Big Bay Mud Fun Run was held in Big Bay, Michigan on Saturday, August 30th. A truck named “Obsession” literally tore up the track and finished its run in 3.2 seconds. A full four seconds under the nearest competitor.

The nitrous oxide fed super-modified truck shot mud thirty feet in the air as it skimmed across the mud entrenched track.

The 90 degree heat was drying the track out faster than expected and the track crew had to work extra hard to keep the ruts to a minimum and the mud thick and smooth.

There were some minor problems with the water supply early on but the crew got the track saturated and the mud was deep and wet by mid-day, just in time for the almost world-famous bikini run.

There was a bulldozer on site to keep the track smooth and rut free. A backhoe was also on hand to pull vehicles out that got stuck. As the day went on and the mud got wetter and deeper, more and more vehicles were getting stuck. It looked like the mud was about three feet thick at times as the vehicles struggled to push the massive weight out of the way with their big engines, big tires and big egos.

This kind of racing isn't easy on the vehicles either. Mitch Fulsher lost his four-wheel drive when the gears in his front axle became stripped. Several other vehicles (Joey Enright, Josh Bullock, Erik Fisk) were knocked out of competition as well with mechanical problems due to the overwhelming stress that the incredibly heavy mud puts on vehicles.

There was even a couple of ATV's and snowmobiles racing for bragging rights. Some of the funnest vehicles to watch race are the open cab design ones that end up coating the driver and/or passenger with mud as they race down the track.

The event's proceeds are donated to a variety of local organizations and individuals around Powell Township according to race officials.
