The Northern Michigan University Wildcats womens volleyball team lost their match against the Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals in four sets at the Vandament Arena in Marquette, Michigan on Saturday, September 13, 2008.
The Cardinal's size at the net, quick offense and defense proved to be too much for the Wildcats.
It seemed like the Cardinals were just picking apart NMU's defense with hard shots through and between the blockers and timely tip overs that caught our libero and defense off guard.
The Cardinal's just seemed to be in the right place at the right time. Several blocks, great sets and kills and a back row that pretty much kept everything off of the floor all contributed to the win.
NMU had a few unforced errors with a few serves in the net and a few balls that they thought were out but landed right on the base line.
During serving warm-ups, Cassie Osiecki looked like she had some shoulder pain after a few jump serves. Combined with the fact that Breanne Zaremba's leadership and ability was missing on defense hindered the Cats for this match.
Either setter Rachel Green struggled with getting her sets to the outside or our power hitters, Mandie Meyer, Katt Garvick and Daniella Bezerra, just couldn't get their timing right as several passes were either tipped or pushed over. Give credit to the SVSU defense as they were double and triple teaming the hitters all day long.
I thought senior, Caryn VanBeckum and freshman, Casey Carroll did their jobs in the middle but the blocks were few as the right and left side hitters struggled with their timing and left gaping holes for the Cardinals to exploit (which might have been a coaching strategy to spread out the defense).
