The Marquette Senior High School Redmen are still winless in their first four games. MSHS lost to the visiting Escanaba Eskymos at William R. Hart Stadium in Marquette, Michigan on Friday, September 19, 2008.
It appeared to me that it wasn't Escanaba's high powered offense or their stingy defense that led to Marquette's demise during their homecoming game on Friday night.
Kyle Lajoye had a few nice runs, Joe Simon caught a few passes, made some nice runs and had a few key solo tackles, Tyler Leaf was getting some penetration on Escanaba's offensive line and even had a couple of sacks, Jared Carroll had some great tackles but Marquette needed more than a few key players to play well to pull off their first win of the season.
It seemed that single coverage in the secondary, a failure to make tackles and confusion on the defensive line seemed to be the biggest problems the Redmen faced.
Defensive Coach, Matt Edgell, yelled plays in from the sidelines only to find blank stares, odd looks and the occasional raised hands depicting a confused understanding of the instructions. Marquette had to call several untimely time-outs as players were either missing or were not substituting correctly for the called play.
I'm no expert but I think Marquette could benefit from opening up the offense. And why does one of Marquette's most talented runners and power backs choose to just kick the ball? Dan Menze shows his immense talents on the soccer field but chooses to be just a kicker on the football team. I believe his powerful running ability could be a huge asset for Marquette even if it's only on special teams.
