The Northern Michigan University Wildcats womens volleyball team swept Urbana University in three sets at Vandament Arena in Marquette, Michigan on November 1, 2008.
The Cats' put on quite a show as the team was celebrating parents and senior day at Vandament Arena. The Cats' defeated the Blue Knights 25-17, 25-8, 25-18.
Senior middle hitter Caryn VanBeckum led NMU with 15 kills, followed by junior outside hitter Mandie Meyer with 10 and sophomore outside hitter Daniela Bezerra with nine.
I think a lot of credit for the volleyball teams success should go to second year coach, Dominic Yoder. He basically came in to a team that didn't have a lot of success with the previous two coaches. The first thing I noticed when he took over as Head Coach was the mutual respect being displayed on the court. The team followed set procedures, responded to instructions from the sideline, listened intently during timeouts, hustled in and off the court and supported each other. Yoder's professionalism never wavered.
By the second year, Yoder brought in some more talented players, cut some that didn't improve and the veterans that made the team came back noticeably stronger and leaner. The team had its intensity back. He always plays the player that best fits the situation, despite their abilities and experience. I think he's the most knowledgeable coach NMU has had yet. I hope he sticks around for awhile.
