Preparations are underway as Friday is the Opening Day of the 2024 firearm deer season in Michigan. Tens of thousands of hunters have taken to the woods around the state in hopes of bagging that big buck! The Department of Natural Resources is reminding successful hunters to report their harvest. The mandatory reporting is meant to help officials manage deer conversation. This year, hunters are encouraged to take a buck AND doe. Over population is one of the reasons. The DNR says the state has lost about 30% of its hunters over the last two decades, and trends are showing it’s only going to get worse. That means actions need to be taken to make sure deer do not become over populated. Hunters can use the DNR Hunt Fish App, or online here.
