Hancock, MI – New Power Tour, Inc., a Hancock-based energy nonprofit, received a $220k
contribution in August from the Klungness Foundation to support the $1M recently awarded to
the Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Region (WUPPDR) from the
Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) through MI HOPE, or Michigan
Housing Opportunities Promoting Energy Efficiency. The program is designed to repair and/or
replace the roofs, windows, and doors of income-qualified households.
Copper Country native Nelson Sommerfedlt, PhD, Urban Energy Systems Researcher at KTH
Royal Institute of Technology (Stockholm, Sweden) is a Trustee of the Klungness Foundation.
Knowing how critical home energy renovations are, the Klungness Foundation made the
contribution to directly enable more families and homeowners to upgrade old, expensive and
poorly-performing HVAC systems to new levels of efficiency and comfort, and also to assist
with sealing and insulating old leaky housing stock.
Nelson Sommerfeldt has practical knowledge of renewable energy systems and
understands the necessity for efficient buildings as part of the sustainability equation. “For
years, energy researchers have known that building efficiency is the most cost-effective action
homeowners can take towards our environmental goals,” says Nelson, “but high up-front
costs are a barrier, especially in the homes that need it the most. I am thrilled for the MI
HOPE program and glad we can help lower that barrier a little bit further.”
