NMU Theatre and Dance presents “The Producers” April 8-16, 2022

The Northern Michigan University Theatre and Dance program presents “The Producers,” a Mel Brooks musical. The cast will perform at 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday, April 8-9 and Wednesday-Saturday, April 13-16. A sensory-friendly performance is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, April 16.

The show is about a theater producer, Max Bialystock, who used to be the “King of Broadway,” but is disgraced after his newest show closes on its opening night. When his accountant, Leo Bloom, discovers that a producer could theoretically make more on a bad show than a good one, the two devise a plan to produce the biggest “flop” in Broadway history.

Dashawn Mitchell, a freshman studying musical theater who plays one of the main characters, Max Bialystock.

“I am more than ecstatic to get a role that I set my eyes on from the beginning of the school year, but it’s one thing to prove you can get a role; now I need to fulfill my end of the deal, so to say. Max is a raunchy guy with a lot of energy and I have never had to portray that on stage and it has helped to push me out of my comfort zone with the energy required.”

Mitchell described the musical as a fast-paced and high-energy show with multiple jokes that align directly with Mel Brooks’ style of creating over-the-top stereotypes.

“I can’t wait to put this show in front of an audience,” said Mitchell. I know that we can all provide an entertaining show, I hope that I can leave behind a performance that everyone agrees lives up to the work of the whole company.”

Tickets are available at $17 for the general public, $12 for military, senior citizens and faculty/staff and $10 for students 18 years or younger.
